While the term “fake news” is often used in Japan, the term “disinformation” is generally used among media researchers. However, in this paper, the term "fake news" is basically used with the meaning of “so-called.” This paper reviews research on “fake news” in terms of its definition and spread mechanisms, as well as media literacy education for fighting it. There are various types of disinformation including satire, parody, and misleading or fabricated content, among others. Media literacy programs are expected to be taken for each type of disinformation. However, this is difficult in the current situation where a large amount of information is spread out. The spread mechanism of "fake news" can be explained by human cognitive traits, filter bubbles and echo chambers, and context in the current media landscape. These perspectives on research on the effects of media should be incorporated into media literacy education. In media literacy education, the studies of educational activities were overviewed in terms of information literacy, news literacy, media literacy in the narrow sense, and fact-checking. Its teaching style is considered to be better in a workshop format combining lectures and discussions. On the other hand, it is the media industries, including the press, that are responsible for the creation and spread of fake news. Therefore, it is important to note that media literacy education is only one of the solutions.
